Chapter Four

“Is that seriously a giant freakin’ snowman?” Gabe asked incredulously, as everyone stared at the intruder in the window.

Frosty’s grin deepened into something altogether more malicious. Those who were still seated stood up, and everyone in the room took a few steps away from the window.

“I told ya the Cailleach wasn’t t’be trifled with,” Cillian said bleakly.

“What’re we gonna do?” Maggie asked, her big hazel eyes pinned on her mom.

“I mean, he’s only made of snow,” Rosie said, digging deep to find her gumption. “How dangerous can he actually be?”

As though he’d heard her question, Frosty swiveled from the waist like one of those wooden karate training dolls. His arms hit the window one after the other like the spindles of a turnstile at a football game, slamming against the glass with such force it was a miracle it didn’t shatter.

“Does that answer ya question?” Saoirse said, eyes wide.

“This is ridiculous. Surely we can do something!”

Rosie moved to stand a little in front of the others, starting to gather her energy. Her magic had been weird lately. Stronger, somehow, as though all of the pregnancy hormones coursing through her body gave her extra mojo. Or could it be the little witch inside of her, adding its arcane energy to its mama’s?

“Get back,” Saoirse said to Rosie, sounding terrified. “You’ve got that wee’an to think about!”

Rosie wasn’t able to hide her expression this time. She could see she was going to have to have words with her mother-in-law at some point about not being an invalid just because she was pregnant. But now was not that time.

“I have two other kids here to protect as well,” she said, her tone clearly stating she wouldn’t be entering into a discussion.

Pulling in her energy, Rosie collected it in the pit of her stomach. She used its familiar, tingling warmth to push out the tightness of worry, not wanting to allow this situation to get the better of her. As soon as she felt like she had enough power collected, she released it in a stream of bright red magic in the direction of the hulking snowman outside the window.

It hit Frosty square in the chest, ruffling his scarf and knocking his top hat askew. He opened his mouth and let out an ear-blasting, animalistic scream, sounding for all the world like a thing possessed. Perhaps he was.

Rosie kept the magic focused and strong, pouring it out of her reserve second by second. It was sharp and honed—and after half a minute, it was blatantly obvious to her it was having no effect other than pissing Frosty off.

She retreated, thinking it would be better to save her strength for a better plan.

“You were sayin’?” Cillian said wryly.

Rosie opened her mouth to offer a sassy retort when she noticed something. More white blobs were moving out in the garden, shuffling behind Frosty in the blizzard.

“There’s more!” she exclaimed.

Declan came to her side. “What?”

“Look!”

Sure enough, the blobs revealed themselves as Maggie’s snow-people when they got to the window.
